Have you ever thought...

...that there are too many universities in Spain and there’s no need to have one in each province?

The answer is no. This is not true.

Here’s one of the reasons why: in Andalusia alone, approximately 70,000 students a year enrol in the universities of Cádiz, Córdoba, Jaén, Huelva and Almería (according to the CyD Foundation). If these universities were to close, where would the students go? Perhaps to Seville? Malaga? Granada? Different places around the country? It just wouldn’t be possible.

With over 10,000 students enrolled in most of the ‘new’ public universities, there is clearly a need for them. It could be argued that not all of the qualifications that are taught are necessary or that some courses are more suited to non-university higher education, but to close these universities would be crazy. In other words, perhaps the problem is not too many universities, but too many unsuitable degrees.
