Did you know that
The English discovered champagne as a product? Pas possible!
Well, this really seems to be the case. In his book "2000 ans d’histoire gourmande", Patrice Gelinet explains how, in the seventeenth century, the English bottled wines imported from Champagne. They discovered that some of these were transformed to sparkling wines when sugar or molasses were added to preserve them.
Instead of throwing the bubbly wines away or asking for their money back, they started selling them as a delicacy. The English immediately appreciated the transformation and the opportunity. They discovered "some of the properties" of the product as you will see below.
Gelinet tells us in his book that one of the main characters in a play by Sir George Etherege says: “this effervescent champagne encourages languid lovers...”
Who would have thought it? Innovation.
Make an opportunity out of a weakness.
